European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
